Father Huntington, O. H. C., spoke before the St. Paul's Society in Grays 17, yesterday afternoon, on the spiritual life.
All men, said Father Huntington, agree that a definite course must be followed to gain physical or mental education; but few realize that the spiritual life should be developed by scientific methods. Dogma has a bad sound to many; but it is simply the church expressing what she means by her worship. No body of persons who have no way of telling their object, can have so strong a form of corporate life as a body whose belief is fully stated.
However, dogma is not an artificial thing. It is not an attempt to coerce the worship of men. People coming to the faith of the church think it looks mechanical, but it gives the substance out of which all true emotions must arise. Hence the definite teachings of the church should lead men to study faith.
The spiritual life is the human soul acting toward God as its cause, sustenance and end. To develop it is not a selfish thing: it is a glorification to Him who died for us.
