A large crowd witnessed the finals in the tennis tournament which were played yesterday afternoon on the Carey court. Whitman had little trouble in defeating Thomas in three straight sets, as Thomas played very badly most of the time. A strong wind was blowing across the court and made good lobbing impossible. Thomas did not run up on his service as much as he usually does, while Whitman came up whenever possible and his net play was the feature of the match. Whitman at times used a reverse service which bothered Thomas very much.
The first set was pretty close, but from the first there was little doubt who would win. In the second set Thomas started running up on his service, but he only succeeded in getting the first game, and then Whitman won the next six and the set.
In the third set, Thomas braced up a little, but was very wild, knocking balls out of court and into the net repeatedly. The summary is:
M. D. Whitman '99 defeated R. C. Thomas '96, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3.
