Professor Toy gave the postponed lecture on Hebrew, in the course on the Semitic Languages and Literatures, in Sever 5, last evening.
All the Semitic languages except Hebrew, said Professor Toy, pushed beyond their original limits. This tongue was not that of a commercial people. It is not adapted for scientific, or for philosophic writing. But for denunciatory writing, for beautiful poetry, and for fine prose narrative, the language has not been surpassed.
The short story was produced by Hebrew. Its literature continued to be added to up to a century ago; but now, as a means of communication and for literature, Hebrew has practically ceased to be used.
