Summer Courses in French.

To the Editors of the Crimson:

Permit me to draw the attention of students in Harvard University to the summer courses to be given in Paris this year under the auspices of the Alliance Francaise.

These courses were started last year as an experiment and have proved so successful that a considerable development has been given to them for this year. They are divided into two series, the first beginning on July 1 and ending August 31. Each series comprises five groups. The first group of advanced courses includes a course on the French language, one on classical literature, one on contemporary literature, and one on diction and dramatic reading. Parallel courses are included in the second group. The third group comprises three courses on the Institutions of contemporary France. The fourth treats of the history of French art, and the lectures will be given in the Museums and Monuments of Paris and the immediate neighborhood. The fifth group is devoted to conversation classes, the number of students in any one class not to exceed twelve. The second series in August is of a similar nature.

The instructors are all well known teacher, many of whom are writers of mark and authorities in their special subjects. It will be sufficient to name among others M. M. Brunot, Rebellian, Doumic, Jacquinet and Chailley-Bert.

At the close of each series such students as desire it may take an examination in the courses in that series, and a diploma will be given on passing the examination. The diploma is of two kinds-the major, which certifies that the holder not only knows and speaks French, but is capable of teaching it to foreigners; the minor, which is given to candidates who show proof that they know and can speak French.

The fees are exceedingly moderate. Both series of courses, comprising some two hundred lessons, cost only $32. The fee for a single course or a combination of courses varies from $5 to $15.

Persons intending to attend any of these courses will be furnished with all information concerning private houses and hotels and board on application to the Alliance Francaise, 45 rue de Grenelle. Paris, France.

The detailed announcement of the courses has been posted on the bulletin board of the French Department in Sever Hall. I have a few copies of this announcement, which I shall be glad to give to persons interested.

Yours sincerely,

SUMICHRAST.
