All the matches in the first round of the tennis tournament were finished yesterday, but little good tennis was played. Very few of the men are in practice at this time of the year, and this accounts for the poor playing. Whitman and Thomas have been playing very well and stand a good chance of reaching the finals. Whitman's match with Chauncey was much closer than the score shows. Chauncey played a very pretty game, which would improve much with more practice. The following are the summaries of yesterday's play:
