It has long been the custom of the 'Varsity Crew to charge the class crews an entrance fee for the class boat races and rent for the use of the boat house. It is high time for this custom to be abolished. The 'Varsity football and baseball managements do not charge the class team entrance fees for the class matches and even go to the expense of presenting cups to the members of the winning team. The 'Varsity Crew has no excuse for charging the class crews any entrance fee whatever. The only expense which is incurred is the chartering of the referee's tug; and that is paid for by the money which accrues from the sale of excursion tickets. The class crews are always in financial distress. They have no way of making money and are obliged to rely on subscriptions for their support. The amount of the subscriptions never equals the expenditure. Instead of trying to lighten the burden of the class crews, the 'Varsity charges each of them the exorbitant entrance fee of thirty dollars. The charge of fifty dollars for the use of the boat house is more reasonable, since the crews get something in return for their money. It would not, however, embarrass the 'Varsity much to do away with this source of revenue, and it would be a great relief to the class crews. The latter are really a great benefit to the 'Varsity in developing material. It is to the interest of the 'Varsity to make matters as easy for them as possible. The first step in this direction should be to abolish the entrance fee to the class races and the charge for the use of the boat house.
