Since the first day of practice a week ago, about 60 men have been practicing daily with the freshman baseball squad. Their work so far has consisted of light dumb-bell exercises in the Gymnasium, followed by a short run to the Carey building, where they practice catching grounders and starting. They have also begun lately to practice sliding. The candidates for battery positions are now working in the gymnasium cage and will probably be joined soon by some of the 'varsity candidates. From present indications the freshmen should have a strong battery, but it is too early as yet to judge of the quality of the other candidates.
The coaching is being done by Garrison, who will be assisted by Stevens. J. C. Howe, who has been appointed manager, has received several challenges and is busy arranging the schedule.
The captain will be chosen by the votes of the most promising candidates, in a short time after the beginning of outdoor practice. By that time the squad will have been reduced from its present size, as it is now very unwieldy.
