Tonight the first lecture on Harvard's history will be held under the auspices of the Harvard Memorial Society. Certainly no better man could have been chosen to tell the history of the University during the decade just preceding the Civil War than President Eliot. In 1850 President Eliot was a sophomore in the College, and his father held the position of Treasurer to the University. The year after leaving College he was appointed tutor in mathematics, and in 1858 became an assistant professor of mathematics and chemistry. From this it will be seen that President Eliot was closely connected with the University during the whole of the period about which he is going to speak, first as a student and later as a professor.
