Freshman Trial Debate.

The first trial debate for the selection of speakers to represent the Harvard freshmen in the joint debate with the Yale freshmen took place last night in Harvard 1. The judges were Messrs. Duniway, 3G., Hutton L. S. and Dobyns '98.

The subject for debate was "Resolved, That there should be a large and immediate increase in the navy of the United States." The following spoke: On the affirmative, F. B. Granger, W. H. Conroy, V. Taylor, E. O. Childs, E. E. Wakefield, E. Lisner, F. C. Shaw and W. V. Goldie; on the negative, C. A. Wheeler, H. L. Blackwell, E. S. Wise, E. E. Perry, T. F. Crosthwait, F. C. Sutro, G. Bancroft, F. R. Stoddard, W. Morse, E. Boody, H. W. Adams, F. E. Thayer, C. S. Dolman, W. Soderling, M. S. Holbrook, A. W. Wise, P. G. Carleton, A. E. Branch, F. O. White, P. Auten, R. H. Cox, E. A. Virgin and W. C. Roper.

The men chosen to speak in the final competion next Friday at 7.30 p. m., in Harvard 1, were: G. Bancroft, A. E. Branch, P. G. Carleton, W. H. Conroy, Jr., F. B. Granger, W. Morse, W. Soderling, F. R. Stoddard, F. C. Sutro, V. Taylor, F. O. White.
