It is a matter of much speculation in public circles as to what the Castle Square Opera Company will do next. Beginning with the lighter comic operas the organization has steadily progressed until Carmen, Faust and Trovatore have been given with great fidelity in detail and a general performance for above the average. With the present week comes another change, a season of Gilbert and Sullivan operas is announced, the favorite "Iolanthe" being the first in the series.

It is no slight matter to thus change from Grand to Comic opera, but the Castle Square Opera Company seems able to do this and win new success.

"Iolanthe" on Monday evening opened to a crowded house, and the vast audience were unsparing in applause and laughter, showing conclusively that Mr. Rose had gauged accurately the taste of his public. The cast was a strong one, the individual members of the company seeming to be especially fitted for their respective parts. Mr. Wolff as the Lord Chancellor was thoroughly at home. Mr. Murray as Strephon, Mr. Persse as Mt. Ararat, and Mr. Wooley as Tolloller rendered the familiar airs with charming effect, while Miss Lane as Phyllus was even more dainty and bewitching than ever. Miss Mason sang Iolanthe with great clearness, Miss Leighton was sufficietly impressive as the Fairy Queen, ably seconded by her fairy lieutenants, Miss Ladd and Miss Quinlan.

Mr. W. H. Clark received an ovation when he stepped from the sentry box in the second act. This gentleman is a strong addition to the company.

The chorus shows the result of Messrs. Hirschfeldt's and Jaxon's labors in their accurate and spirited singing, and in the facility with which they enter into the general action of the opera.

Pinafore is in preparation by the company, this being in response to general request by the patrons of the theatre. Iolanthe will be continued another week.
