The Vesper service yesterday afternoon was unusually well attended, considering the stormy waather. Dr. McPherson preached his sermon from the text: "Who through faith from weakness were made strong." Hebrews 11, 33.
Dr. McPherson spoke of man's need of faith for the development of every side of his character; physical, mental and moral. As faith in the doctor's care is indispensable to the patient's easy recovery; as faith is the very soul of all intellectual and artistic powers, thus also, unless the whole universe is a mockery, man must feel that it inspires him with faith in the divine love which created all things.
No religion so supplies this necessity of man's being as does Christianity. The consciousness of Christ's presence comes to us at first as an impulse, but as faith grows, His power becomes a deep rooted principle upon which we can lean with confidence.
The following selections were sung: "Blessed are They," Tours; "Hail ! Gladdening Light," Field; and "Jesus Grant me this I Pray," Sponholtz. The latter was a tenor solo, sung by E. M. Waterhouse '97.
