The race between the two trial eights on Saturday resulted in a victory for Captain Goodrich's crew by about two lenths in 9m. 55s. The record for the course, made by the freshmen in the class race last spring, was 9m. 28s. The water was fairly smooth on Saturday, the air was warm, and the wind and tide were both down stream, so that the weather conditions could hardly have been better; but the crews had been in training only three weeks, were using a stoke that was new to them and rowed in barges so the time may be considered very satisfactory.
The start was made from the Longwood Bridge. The two tugs, one carrying graduates and the other undergraduates, arrived at the bridge before the crews. When the crews arrived with the launch cheers were given for Mr. Lehmann and Goodrich and Perkins. The crews started at 12.50, Perkins's crew catching the water first. They kept the lead only a short time, however. Goodrich's crew soon got ahead and increased the distance steadily. This crew rowed the quicker stroke all through the race, for part of the time making 36 to the minute, while the other crew reached 34. Both crews, however, rowed a splendid race. From these crews eight men have been selected to be coached by Mr. Lehmann before he leaves for England. They will begin work today. Those who have been retained are Bull, Goodrich, Perkins '99, Perkins '98, Sprague, Hollister, Thomson and Boardman.
