THE GRADUATES WIN.

Poor Showing Made by the 'Varsity Eleven.

Yesterday afternoon on Soldiers Field Harvard received the first defeat of the season from a team composed of graduates. The score was 8 to 5.

Harvard's eleven was made up largely of substitutes and the game they put up was not on the whole discouraging. The graduate eleven was composed of old players, some of whom were the strongest players on recent Harvard teams and seven of whom are in good training. Another great disadvantage to the 'Varsity was the fact that several of the graduate team knew the Harvard signals. The Graduates, however, had no time to develop team play.

Waters and Newell did excellent work in breaking through and making holes. Brewer and Hallowell bad an easy time at the ends. Curtis got through the interference without much trouble on several occasions and made some good tackles. The ground gaining of Hayes was a feature, and Cozzens also did good work for Harvard in this respect.

The Graduates took the south goal and Russell kicked off. Cozzens caught the ball and returned it. Curtis was given the ball and made five yards. Then Hayes gained 20 yards through Sargent and Lewis. Curtis and Hayes again made gains and Waters fumbled. With the ball on Harvard's 30-yard line Brown kicked to the middle of the field, but the ball was given to Harvard on her own 10-yard line for off-side play.

At this point Brown was injured and Dibblee took his place. Cozzens ran 20 yards around the right end and Merriman made 5 through tackle. The ball went to the Graduates on four downs.

Crane kicked to Dibblee and before the latter could make any gain Newell downed him. After an exchange of punts the Graduates got the ball on their 30 yard line. They lost the ball on a fumble and Dunlop stepped back for a kick. Beasily kicked a goal. Score, 5 to 0.

Soon after this Dunlop was injured and Hurley was substituted. No more scoring was done in the first half, the most important plays being two good gains by Hayes. Harvard got the ball on downs when time was called.

In the second half the graduates got the ball on downs and Crane made 15 yards on a double pass. Then Crane Kicked to Harvard's 15-yard line. Cozzens was thrown for a loss and Dibblee Kicked 25 yards. Hayes made 10 yards, Waters 5, Curtis 2, and Hayes 3. Hayes then carried the ball over for a tonchdown and Crane kicked the goal. Score, 6 to 5.

Beals kicked off and Hayes returned to Hurley at the 45 yard line. Hurley then made 15 yards. Dibblee tried to kick, but Waters broke through and blocked it. Hayes lost one yard, but on the next attempt made a run for 20 yards. Then the Graduates tried one of their ground kicks through the line and Harvard got the ball on the 5 yard line. Dibblee's kick was blocked and a safety was scored by the 'Varsity. Score, 8 to 5.

In the succeeding play Cozzens ran around the left end for 25 yards. Beale got the ball and ran 50 yards for a touchdown, but time had been called.
