The best match played yesterday in the singles was that between R. F. Parke '98 and H. C. Whitfield '99, the former winning 1-6, 6-1, 6-1. At the start Whitfield played all around his man, passing him repeatedly at the net and serving and driving with force and accuracy; but, after winning the first set, his play weakened decidedly and Parke won the second and third sets rather easily.
In the first round in doubles Shaw and Marvin beat Foster and Carleton, in a hotly-contested match, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. All four men played well, though Marvin deserves especial mention for his brilliant work in the last set.
