About one hundred members of the class of 1900 gathered last evening in Sever 11, for the purpose of forming a Freshman Debating Club. P. G. Carleton, president of the '99 Freshman Debating Club, and one of the debaters against Yale, presided over the meeting. After giving a short history of Freshman debating at Harvard, he introduced Charles Grilk '98, of the Union, and former president of the '98 Freshman Debating Club, who strongly urged the importance of Freshman debating as a preparation for 'Varsity debates.
F. Dobyns '98, of the Forum, urged all those present to join and also to try for the 'Varsity debates. As a member of the advisory board he expressed his doubts of there being a debate this year with Yale 1900, but was quite sure that if this is refused something will be substituted in its place to keep up interest in Freshman debating.
A different plan of organization was persued this year from that of previous years. A chairman to serve until next week was elected. Next week his place will be filled by a new man and the week after by another, and by that time the men will become sufficiently acquainted to elect permanent officers. A temporary chairman and a temporary committee on debate, to serve until permanent officers are elected were also chosen. Fifty-eight men signed the constitution and payed their initiation fee. The officers elected are as follows: Temporary chairman, W. P. Eaton; temporary secretary, F. A. Stephens; temporary committee on debating, A. L. Becker, H. J. Davenport.
