Hon. John F. Andrew, of the class of 1872, died suddenly of apoplexy at his residence, 32 Hereford street, Boston, some time Thursday night.

Hon. John Forrester Andrew was the son of the war governor John A. Andrew, and was born in Hingham on the 16th of November, 1850. After his preliminary training in the public schools of Boston he went to Harvard, where he graduated in the class of '72. Three years later he graduated from the Harvard Law School, and immediately after his graduation he was admitted to practice at the Suffolk bar. In 1880 he was sent to the House of Representatives from Ward 9 and was twice re-elected to that body. Then he was sent to the Senate for the year '84 from the Back Bay district. Up to this time he had been a Republican, but upon his return home as a delegate from the Republican national convention which nominated Blaine, in 1884, he left the Republican party and became an Independent.

He was then given an independent nomination for the Senate, and with this and a Democratic indorsement he was re-elected by more than 1400 majority.

He was offered the Democratic nomination for Congress in his district in 1884, but he declined it; but at the close of his term in the Senate in '86 he was the Democratic candidate for governor, and he came nearer an election than any other Democratic candidate for years. He declined a renomination for governor in '87, but the next year he became a candidate for Congress from the third district and was elected. He was reelected in 1890.

He was noted for his active work in all benevolent institutions, and held the offices of president of the Massachusetts Infant Asylum, president of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, president of the Home for Aged Colored Women and trustee of the Asylum for Feeble-minded Youth. He was also an active member of the New England Historic-Genealogical Society.

He was married in Boston, Oct. 11, 1883, to Harriet, daughter of Nathaniel and Cornelia (Van Rensselaer) Thayer. She died in 1891, leaving two daughters, Cornelia Thayer Andrew and Elizabeth Andrew. A brother, Mr. Harry H. Andrew of Virginia, and two sisters, Misses Edith and Elizabeth, are also survivors of the deceased.

The funeral will take place today at 12.30 o'clock.
