NINETY-EIGHT WINS.

Sophomores Beaten in the Second Game. Cozzens Strikes Out 16 Men.

The freshmen won a well earned victory from the sophomores yesterday on Soldiers Field by a score of 8 to 4. The credit for this belongs entirely to Cozzens, who pitched a fine game, allowing only four singles and giving no bases on balls and striking out 16 men. He had the rather unusual record, however, of hitting seven men with pitched balls. Brown had plenty of work to do, but although he made few errors, his throwing to bases was poor, and his passed balls and missed third strikes were numerous. With the exception of McVey the infield was weak and in the outfield Chandler made two bad errors. Edmunds distinguished himself by a fine running catch of a long fly by Scott. The sophomores put up a much poorer game than on Friday and could neither bat nor field. Anderson had an off day and made some glaring errors. Perry pitched a fairly good game but was rather wild. Scott supported him well behind the bat but marred his record by muffing a high fly. Stevens fielded brilliantly. All the team were weak in batting, especially Garrison, who struck out four times in succession.

The game was very long drawn out and would have been uninteresting except for the uncertainty of the result up to the end. The crowd was well provided with shot guns, pistols, tin horns, and fire crackers, while the freshmen had also hired a brass band and a piano organ to furnish music for the occasion.

In the first inning a hit by Hayes and a base on balls given to McVey, followed by a succession of passed balls and wild pitches gave two runs to the freshmen. The sophomores scored once in the second on Martin's single, a stolen base and Chandler's muff of Anderson's fly.

In the third Haskell crossed the plate on his hit, and fumbles by Anderson and Stevens. Hayes tried to score on this error but was thrown out.

No more runs were made until the fifth inning, when the sophomores tied the score. Perry was hit by a pitched ball, Lord reached first on a fumble by Haskell, and Beale made a good single bringing Perry in. Fox was hit by the pitcher, Scott made a long hit which was cleverly caught by Edmunds, but Lord scored before the ball could be returned. Beale carelessly allowed himself to be caught off third base, Martin made his second hit of the game, but with two on bases Stevens went out on a grounder to Cozzens.

The freshmen took the lead in the sixth. Brown made a single, and Anderson threw Chandler's grounder far over Fox's head, allowing Brown to reach third, when Edmunds brought him in by a sacrifice.

They added four more runs and won the game in the seventh. Perry, Fox and Scott all made errors, and with the bases full, McVey made a single. Cozzens and Haskell scored, the latter reaching the plate on Scott's fumble of Beale's throw. Brown's sacrifice and a passed ball by Scott let in the other two men.

The sophomores had a fine chance to win in this inning. Lord singled. Beale was called out for running out of line. Fox and Scott were both hit by pitched balls, filling the bases with only one man out. Martin and Stevens proved unequal to the emergency and both struck out.

Beale made the last run in the ninth by reaching first by being hit by a pitched ball, stealing second and third bases and scoring on a wild pitch.

After the game the freshmen formed in procession with the band at their head and marched to Memorial Hall, cheering the team. They found the doors closed, however, and had to disperse without entering the hall.
