The architects have decided that the supports of the floor of the present reading room are not strong enough to bear the weight of the new stack and reading room. The old brick pillars in the basement will be taken out, and the new stack will rest on the foundation. This change will not make room for any more books, as all the available space in the basement is already occupied. At present there are 100,000 volumes in the basement and reading room, including about 10,000 reserved books. The latter will be placed in Lower Massachusetts shortly after Class Day, while all the rest will be temporarily placed in the basement of Conant Hall. The process of packing and moving the books will be begun May 1st.
