Princeton Letter.

PRINCETON, N. J., April 19, 1895.

The annual spring elections of the borough were held last week. Great interest was manifested by the members of the university in these elections, as the issue was whether or not permission to run a trolley line through Princeton should be given. The faculty and students formed the largest part of the conservative party which was opposed to the trolley, and to them is due the large majority opposed to the project. Princeton, situated as it is in a small town, has always been known as a rural university, and it was feared that with the electric railway would come industries which would take away some of the most charming features of the place.

The preliminary debates to choose Princeton's representatives in the debate with Yale were held last week. W. F. Burns '95, B. L. Hirshfield '95 and R. M. McElroy '96 were chosen. The question for debate is: "Resolved, That under the circumstances the income tax of 1894 was justifiable." Yale submitted the question and Princeton chose the affirmative. The contestants for the Lynde senior debate were also chosen last week.

The commencement appointments were given out lately. The Latin salutatory, the highest honor for scholarship, was given to W. D. Ward, who played halfback on the university football team for two years, and is at present playing second base on the baseball team.

The baseball team visited Baltimore and Washington on its southern trip during the Easter vacation, playing one game with the Baltimore team and two with the Georgetown. The work of the men was good, and prospects for a first-class team are very bright.
