The 'varsity baseball practice yesterday afternoon was varied by a game between the first and second nines. The men on the second nine were changed about somewhat, and at the beginning of the practice simply fielded while the first nine took turns at the bat. Later in the afternoon a regular game began, each side making the usual three outs. The batting of the first nine was on the whole encouraging. L. A. Frothingham and J. Wiggin watched the practice.
The last few days of out-door ball practice have shown what the abilities of the candidates are, much better than all the in-door practice has been able to do. It is still far too early in the season to form any estimate of the make-up of the nine but the number of men is gradually being reduced and the next two weeks will show pretty well what men will go to the training table.
At present there are several equally good men trying for each position. The new men are all showing up well and will give the men from last year's team a hard fight to keep their positions. The most prominent men in the various positions are:
Catchers - D. D. Scannell '97, G. Buckman '97, C. E. Bacon '95, B. A. Morton Sp.
Pitchers - A. Highlands '95, C. J. Paine '97, E. W. Ames '96, A. T. Harris '97, H. U. Lamprey '98, G. F. Cozzens '98.
First base - J. J. Hayes '96, T. G. Stevenson '96, E. N. Lacey L. S.
Infield - J. Dean '97, G. L. Wrenn '96, L. Anderson '97, A. N. Winslow '96, G. B. Haskell '98, G. E. Brown L. S.
Outfield - W. L. Garrison '97, A. M. Beale '97, E. E. McCarthy '96, W. H. Rand '98, E. G. Burgess '98, C. B. Manning '98, H. Selfridge '96.
Colonel Winslow is at present out of town but he will commence coaching April first. During his absence L. A. Frothingham and J. Highlands have charge of the men and are assisted by several old players now in the law school.
The first game will be that with Andover on Saturday afternoon at Soldiers Field. The diamond will be laid out on the grounds where the football games were played last fall and the fence on the river side of the grounds will be torn down in order to give room for the fielders. There will be no admission charged to the game.
