The batteries are now entering upon their fourth week of practice, and a marked improvement in the work of some of the men is manifest. Several of the pitchers are acquiring good control, and their curves are much more marked than at first. A dummy has been made which is placed close to the plate where the batsman would ordinarily stand. This enables the pitchers to practice throwing shoulder or low balls as they desire, and also gives the catcher practice in throwing without interfering with or being balked by the batsman. As yet only three men have been dropped, and the candidates with these exceptions are the same men who answered Captain Whittemore's call in January. Next week the candidates for the freshman ball team will be called out and a day or two later the remaining 'varsity candidates will be called together to begin practice in the Carey Building.
