In order to keep up the interest in chess during the entire year, the Chess Club has decided that the championship of the college must be held subject to challenge on the following conditions:
Besides the champion there shall be a "guard" of four men. Any one of these may challenge the champion to a match for his title and any member of the club may challenge any member of the guard for his place. There shall also be a sophomore champion who must defend his title from any man in the two lower classes. The executive committee appointed as guard: W. L. Van Kleeck '95, J. Hewins '96, L. B. Shoenfeld '95, H. Lewis '96; and as sophomore champion, A. W. Ryder. Hewins has already begun a match with the present champion, S. M. Ballou, and E. P. Fay '96 has challenged Hewins for his place in the guard.
