Rip Van Winkle at the Castle Square theatre has proved a surprise to press and public. When the opera was first announced there were not a few who hinted at failure, but the opening on Monday evening, Dec. 16, dispelled all doubts and loud were the praises heaped on the artists in their respective roles and the management for their liberality in the matter of production.
It is safe to say that none of the Castle Square productions have displayed the wealth of detail, the magnificent costuming and the striking pietures that are to be seen in Rip Van Winkle. The company is most happily cast. Mr. Wolff surprised the vast audience by giving a wonderfully fife-like performance of Rip, the Village Vagabond,- all the nice tone gradations of the sympathetic scenes were most artistically made, and one cannot soon forget the finale of Act 2, where Rip falls asleep surrounded by Hendrick Hudson and his ghostly crew. Miss Lane was charming-she can do nothing badly,- while Miss Leighton added to the fun of the piece in comc love scenes with Mr. Wooley. Messrs. Persse, Murray, and Read came in for a good share of favor and the two children were delightful in their naturalness.
Stage Manager Edison and Artist King more than kept the promise made the public in regard to effects and scenes, while Director Jackson showed some superb work with his chorus.
The management have decided to prolong the stay of Rip Van Winkle a week longer than was originally proposed,- therefore the opera will be seen at the Castle Square all next week.
MISS ROGERS, who has been carefully trained by the most skillful Parisian specialists in treatment of the hair and facial massage has opened an office at 26a Brattle street (McNamee's Building).
