The Arts and Letters Co. of New York has just sent us an extremely amusing book, entitled "Fables and Essays," by John Bryan of Ohio. We are at a loss to comprehend the "of Ohio" part. Why he should wish thus to compromise the Buckeye State is inconceivable. The book is composed chiefly of prefaces in which Mr. Bryan has endeavored to vindicate himself by explaining how he came to be an author; but even with such copious explanation he is not convincing.

In one of the prefaces he writes, "Most authors publish their books for the same reason that hens lay eggs-to relieve themselves." We sincerely trust that he has accomplished his purpose.

Outing for December is seasonable, interesting and finely illustrated The fiction department has two complete stories, while the sporting field is admirably covered. "The Cream of the Vale," a fine picture of English Fox Hunting; "Skating," by Ed. W. Sandys, an expert on the blades; "Hunting the Caiman," "Caribou Hunting," "Two Hours over Decoys," "An Outing in Labrador," by R. G. Taber; "A Turkey Hunt," appeal to all sportsmen. "Salmon Fishing on Snake River," describes December angling in the Far West. Wheelmen will read with interest "Lenz's World Tour," and "Touring Bermuda." "On the Frontier Service," illustrated by Frederick Remington, proves that soldiering is serious work. The editorial and record departments are strong features.
