Freshman Practice.

The freshman practice yesterday, on account of the delay caused by having the team's picture taken, was devoted entirely to playing. The two elevens lined up and played steadily for forty minutes. The play was at first slow and characterized by loose interference and fumbling, but in the latter part of the practice, under the coaching of Newell and Lewis, the men put lots of snap into the game.

The first eleven was strong in offensive but weak in defensive work, especially at centre, allowing the second eleven to make continual gains through the line. The backs ran well but were not always sure, owing to Farley's bad judgment in directing the plays. All of their important gains were made around the ends, where they easily outplayed the second eleven.

The second eleven made most of its gains through the centre, twice by continuous rushes through the first eleven's line, carrying the ball down the field.

After the play Lewis and Newell coached the center men, paying most attention to defensive work, in which there is great need of efficient coaching. The line-up was:

FIRST. SECOND.
