across the line. The goal ought to have been an easy one, but Captain Brewer failed to kick it. Score, 4 to 0.
Hayes received Pratt's kick on the 20 yard line and carried it almost to the centre of the field. Then the three backs were sent through the centre one after the other with steady gains. But on the fourth play Dunlop fumbled, and Amherst got the ball. She did not keep it, however, as Hallowell got it on the first play by breaking through. At this point Harvard played in grand style. Hayes made six yards on a centre play which Gonterman followed with five more. An end play netted Hayes seven yards and then Gonterman carried it over. The goal was a difficult one, but Captain Brewer kicked it, and the score was 10 to 0.
The pace which Harvard had set in making the last touchdown was too much for the men. Hallowell was hurt, but resumed playing, and then Captain Brewer was injured and compelled to leave the game. When Townsend had taken Brewer's place the Harvard men carried the ball straight down the field for a touchdown without losing it once. Dunlop made the touchdown and kicked the goal. Score, 16-0.
Only two minutes of the 15 were left and if Harvard had not lost the ball for Gould's off-side play another tonchdown would have been made. As it was the half ended with the ball on Amherst's 15 yard line.
In the first part of the second half Harvard played very poor ball. The snap of the first half was entirely lacking. Finally after 10 minutes Holt got the ball on a fumble when it was on Amherst's 15 yard line. Davis made two short gains through the hole which Holt made for him, and then C. Brewer made a touchdown, but failed to kick the goal.
After this the play was more spirited. C. Brewer received Pratt's kick and carried the ball 10 yards. Then Moulton was hurt and Cabot took his place. Harvard took advantage of the wind and C. Brewer made a beautiful punt of 35 yards.
Amherst got the ball for Harvard's offside play, but Harvard got it again on the first play. Davis and Fairchild made slight gains, and then behind the best interference that has been seen on Soldiers Field this year, C. Brewer ran 25 yards and made a touchdown. He failed to kick a goal, and, although the play continued for a minute more giving C. Brewer a chance to punt 55 yards, the score remained 24 to 0.
