PRINCETON, N. J., Oct. 1, 1895.
The opening exercise of the college were held in Marquand Chapel on Sept. 18, and since that time the students and professors have been returning and the usual routine work is now fairly started. There have been no important changes in the faculty this year and the curriculum has been changed very little. The freshman class is about the size of previous ones and the number of students taking the various scientific and engineering courses is seen to be increasing faster than the number taking the classical courses. Some new instructors have been added in all the departments. This fall the Princeton Proparatory School, which since its foundation has been conducted as a private concern has come into closer relations to the university and will in the future be conducted by a board of trustees all of whom are Princeton alumni. The instruction in the class rooms will be under the oversight of professors of the university. The interclass baseball series were played last week and resulted in a tie between the juniors and seniors, each of these classes having won two games and lost one, but as the seniors defeated the juniors during the games, they will probably claim the college championship. Quite a lot of new material which may develop into something promising next spring was brought out in these games.
The football practice has been going on since college opened but on account of the extremely hot weather, it has been very light. Not very many of last year's players have returned this year but among the new men are some very promising candidates. Perhaps the best of the new men are Baird who has been playing well at fullback, and Ayres and Tucker at half and quarter respectively. In fact the regular team will probably be a very strong one but there will be a scarcity of good substitutes. The team goes to the training table immediately after the game tomorrow.
