The first meeting of the St. Paul's Society was held in the society room Grays 17, last evening. The meeting was entirely devoted to the business of laying out the work for the year. The following important committees reported the work that was to be done in their respective branches: Committee on freshman reception, committee on lectures and addresses, committee on smoke talks, committee on sermons to be given in Christ Church.
The committee on the reception to freshmen reported that as Grays 17 was too small for so many men, they had arranged to have the use of the Colonial Club for the reception. The date of the reception was left undecided as it was thought best to wait for the return of the Bishop of the Diocese on Oct. 29. If the Bishop is able to be present on Oct. 30, it will probably be on that date.
The committee on Christ Church sermons advocated an important change in regard to these services. Hitherto these sermons by bishops and prominent clergy of the church have been held during the month of April. This year they will be held on successive Sunday afternoons in Lent, which will bring them about six weeks earlier. Father J. O. S. Huntington O. H. C., and Dr. Robbins, Dean of the cathedral at Albany, have already promised to speak.
It was decided to issue a statement of the work done by the society, and also a programme of the meeting to be held under the auspices of the society.
The president made a speech outlining the spirit in which all churchmen should engage in the work of the society. He said that there had never, so far as he knew, been so promising a beginning of the society. This statement was justified by the exceedingly large attendance and the interest manifested. The secretary announced that the first corporate communion on the schedule was to be on St. Luke's Day, Oct. 18. Four new members were elected.
