'98 FOOTBALL CRITICISM.

Line-Up For the Game with Boston Latin School.

Some idea of the way the positions on the sophomore eleven will be filled in the class series can now be formed. For left end Curtis and Emmons are both playing well, and the chances between them are about even. Captain Rice is now playing at left tackle and will probably keep that position. Burrage is a certainlty for left guard. Marvin makes a very good centre, although he is rather green. Graydon is not very satisfactory at right guard, and will probably give way to Hennen or Hoague, one of whom will probably come from the 'varsity; or Bouve may be persuaded to come out. Thayer has been playing right tackle, but Adams is pushing him hard for the place. Both play hard and it will be difficult to choose between them. Thayer is a little the quicker. Hurley at right end is heavier and stronger than Flershem, but both play a good, hard game. The chances seem to be in favor of Hurley, though Flershem has been playing longer, and works better with the team. At quarter Valentine has fallen off in his work, but he still holds his own against Flint, his nearest rival. Wadsworth may come from the 'varsity and possibly shut out Valentine. though he is not so quick. Shepard at left half runs hard, but does not use his eyes and fumbles the ball frightfully. Gibbs, the other half, is a good ground gainer and a hard player, but seems a bit overworked at present, as in fact does Shepard. Manning is a fixture at fullback, having had good training with the 'varsity last year. Flint is the next choice for the position.

The men are not playing as well as they have been; there is a lack of dash, and the interference and general paly, while at times good, is generally erratic. The breaking through is not good and the men seem to run to individual play, instead of team work, as was the reverse last week.

The line-up with the Boston Latin team today will probably be: Curtis, Emmons, l.e.; Rice, Adams, l.t.; Burrage, l.g.; Marvin, c.; Graydon, r.g.; Thayer, r.t.; Hurley, Flershem, r.e.; Valentine, q.b.; Shepard and Gibbs, h.b.; Manning, Flint. f.b.
