OBITUARY.

James Walker Austen '49.

Judge James Walker Austen, of the class of forty-nine, died yesterday at Southampton, England.

He was born Jan. 8, 1829, and prepared for Harvard in the Training Field School of Charlestown, and the Chauncey Hall School, Boston.

Graduating from the Harvard Law School in 1851, he went to California by water, thence to the Hawaiian Islands, where he occupied a prominent position in the legislative and judicial courts, till his return to this country in 1872 for the education of his four sons. While in Hawaii he was elected member of the Hawaiian parliament for three sessions and was then appointed judge of the Supreme Court of the Islands.

One of his sons, Walter, graduated from Harvard in 1887, and is a member of the Suffolk bar. Another, Herbert, resides in Boston.
