Engineering Society.Mr. Eckley B. Coxe gave a most interesting address on "The choice of a Profession" before the Engineering Society last evening.
By a succession of entertaining anecdotes and illustrations, he brought home to each student the essential importance of a thorough acquaintance with the fundamental principles of engineering, including a good knowledge of mechanics, physics, chemistry, mathematics and drawing. The higher branches of all these studies he showed to be useful only when so thoroughly understood that they can be put to a practical use.
The success of a man's business, he insisted, was a practical illustration of the theory of the survival of the fittest; that man will always reach the top of the ladder who is best able to adapt himself to the requirements of whatever position may offer. It does not depend upon how much he may know, but upon how much of his knowledge he can make of use to himself.
He especially called attention to the fact that a control of good English and the power of clear expression were important factors in the success of every engineer.
