The important article in the Monthly for May is by Professor Josiah Royce on "The Student of Philosophy." At the start he says: "I propose to speak, not of the study of philosophy in itself considered, but of the far too much neglected topic of the conditions that make it wise for any individual to become, in any more extended or elaborate sense, a student of philosophy." With this proposition before him, Professor Royce goes on through twelve pages of such delightful reading as is characteristic of him. His topic is timely and his discussion of it has the interest which always attaches to the words of those who know of what they speak.
