faculty but the medical faculty may grant free or reduced tuition to the extent of ten per cent. of the number of students, on the ground of character, ability and need combined.

The growth of the college library has been also very satisfactory. The additions during the year amounted to 19,797 volumes.

The statistical tables show that there were 226 instructors and 1,641 students at the college during the year, including one woman student in the course for women now superseded by Barnard College. The students came from forty-two states and territories and fifteen foreign countries.

The number of degrees conferred was 312, including the degree of Bachelor of Arts conferred on eight students of Barnard College.
