Yesterday afternoon at President Eliot's house the Directors of the Harvard Dining Association met the President and Dr. Wolcott, to confer with them about the uses of the Dining Hall next year. Nothing has been more apparent this winter than the unsatisfactory arragement of the general tables, as there has averaged at them two and three quarter men per seat. This is on the face of it most unsatisfactory. There are now 1125 members of the association, of which number 597 are at the 17 general tables, while the waiting list numbers over 200.

The question under consideration was how to remedy the existing evil of the system and how better to provide for the many men in the hall, and for those wishing to get in, it being generally acknowledged that to return to a club table system throughout, of one to a seat, was, for the present at least, not feasible. Among the plans suggested were the following: To keep the division of club and general tables as now, limiting the numbers at the general tables strictly to two men to a seat, while giving club tables the privilege of taking on two extra men. This would accommodate about 1000 men. The other plans were for the most part to have club tables throughout the hall, the number at each to vary from two to nine men beyond its seating capacity. In this way from 1000 to 1275 men could be boarded. Minor details were suggested such as dividing the larger club tables into halves, each half choosing its meal hour, and dining separately. Most of the proposed plans tended toward a combination of general and club table systems.

Nothing was definitely decided upon, as all suggestions presented so many draw backs. The corporation seemed to favor accommodating as many men as possible, consistent with comfort to all concerned. The maximum number the present kitchen facilities can provide for is 1300, so that a limit is here reached if the basement is not enlarged. The whole question is to be brought up again by the directors, before the present board goes out of office, at the end of April. The directors want to get at the general feeling in this matter, and they can be materially aided if those interested will send suggestions to them.
