There are still about twenty candidates left for the '97 crew and this number will be kept until the crew goes to the training table after the Easter recess. The men are lighter than usual, but lack the snap in their work which should come with the lighter weight. However, they are about up to the standard of freshman crews at this time of the year.
The crews are made up as follows:
FIRST CREW.
Lord, 153 1-2, Bow.
Cornwall, 152, 2
Duffield, 166, 3
Chatman, 159, 4
Endicott, 155, 5
Sleeper, 163 1-2, 6
Phelps, 169 1-2, 7
Sprague, 169 1-2, Stroke.
SECOND CREW.
Connor, 168, Bow.
White, 177, 2
Bearclay, 162, 3
Kernan, 164, 4
Kennedy, 158 1-2, 5
Elder, 169, 6
Dyer, 170, 7
Lee, 149, Stroke.
Other men rowing are Eakins, 155; Carpenter, 149 1-2; Lewis, 151.
The whole stroke has been taken up and about ten inches of slide is used but the parts of the stroke are still separated in the rowing.
The general faults of the crew are a lack of control over the body and a roughness throughout the entire stroke. The men do not realize that the stroke must be smooth and full of snap at the same time.
The individual faults of the men on the two crews are as follows:
Sprague, stroke.- Jerky in his stroke throughout and goes back too far.
Phelps, No. 7.- Goes back too far and swings down into the boat.
Sleeper, No. 6.- Lacks control of the body, too slow on the shoot and does not swing well.
Endicott, No. 5.- Slow and lacks snap all through.
Chatman, No. 4.- Slow and loose with body, does not tip shoulders on enough.
Duffield, No. 3.- Goes back too far, is stiff and slow on the shoot.
Cornwall, No. 2.- Does not use his shoulders well.
Lord, bow.- Stiff, but otherwise fairly good.
Second crew:
Lee, stroke.- Very stiff and swings down into the boat.
Dyer, No. 7.- General lack of control all through.
Elder, No. 6.- Is very loose and lacks control over body.
Kennedy, No. 5.- Jerky and lack of control of shoulders.
Kernan, No. 4.- Does not sit well and is very loose.
Barclay, No. 3.- Loose and does not sit up well.
White, No. 2.- Is slow all through.
Connor, bow.- Very loose, has not been rowing long.
