At the last meeting of the Chess and Whist Club it was unanimously voted that at the annual whist tournament the system of duplicate whist should be adopted.
Mr. F. K. Young, who for some years has been the chess champion of New England, was present at the meeting. He played simultaneous games with ten of the members, of which he won seven. The men who played, with their openings, are: J. Hewins '96, Fianchetto defense; G. L. Paine '96, Evans gambit; W. L. Van Kleeck '95, French defense; S. E. Johnson '95, King's gambit, N. L. J. Gron, Gr., Two Knights' defense; E. P. Fay '96, French defense; H. W. Lewis '96, Fianchetto defense; L. Shoenfeld '95, Muzio gambit; G. B. Wilson '94, Evans gambit; T. Spalding '95, French gambit. Of these, Paine, Van Kleeck, and Spalding won their games.
