The Trophy Room is evidently in need of attention. It is a pity that such a custom as the preservation of athletic trophies should be neglected. Such trophies are not only desirable as souvenirs of past efforts and triumphs, but they are valuable as inspirations to future efforts. Pride in the past and hope for the future unite in calling for the maintenance of the custom.

That the custom has been neglected is due to one of two causes. Either officials have been indolent, or else individuals have monopolized what, in justice, belongs to the University. In either case, the cause is blameworthy. The custom should be preserved and we believe that, if the opinions of the members of the University could be definitely ascertained, they would be found unanimous in support of this.

What then is to be done? The room was devoted by the gymnasium authorities to this purpose in response to a student movement. The revival of the custom ought also to be a student movement. Any regulations by a body, not composed of students, would seem to us to be out of place. The matter is properly one of sentiment and not of regulation.

And yet if it is to be entrusted to the students, there is certainly need of some decisive action. The maintenance of the custom should not be left to chance, but should be given into the hands of some definite person or committee. Otherwise, the temporary agitation in regard to the matter will soon expend itself without having done permanent good. It is apparently the duty of the managers of the different teams to attend to the matter, but if every senior class made some officer-the secretary for example-responsible for the proper preservation of the trophies and records of the year, the perpetuation of the custom in future would probably be fully ensured. Moreover, just at present, a committee from the different athletic organizations should set to work in order to repair the remissness of recent years. The University authorities stand ready to give all proper assistance; much good can be accomplished through a little concerted work by the students.
