Wendell Phillips Club.The Wendell Phillips Club held its first meeting of the year last evening. Mayor Bancroft had been invited to address the members of the society. He spoke of the value of debating clubs at Harvard as part of a man's education here. He said that there was a great lack of public speakers who were able to talk clearly and interestingly, and he urged upon the students to take advantage of the opportunities for practice in debating offered by the Harvard clubs.

Speeches were also made by A. S. Apsey L. S., and A. P. Stone L. S.

Hasty Pudding Club.The officers of the Hasty Pudding Club elected last night are as follows: President, W. K. Brice; vice-president, R. D. Wrenn; secretary, J. Purdon; chorister, R. L. Whitman; librarian, F. B. Winslow.

Glee Club.Of the seventy-four men who tried for the Glee Club, the following have been taken on for further trial. Notice of the first rehearsal will be published.

Harvard Union.The meeting of the Harvard Union last night in Sever 11 was the best attended and the most enthusiastic the Union has ever held; a large number of freshmen were present. The question, "Resolved, That it is the duty of a Harvard student to take an active interest in party politics," was discussed on the affirmative by J. P. Warren '96 and H. E. Addison '96, and on the negative by W. H. Sheldon '95 and R. C. Ringwalt '95.

Each of the principal disputants spoke twice. This method of giving each speaker a chance for rebuttal will probably be adopted in the intercollegiate debates.

At the competitive debate for membership, which will be held two weeks from last night, as was announced in yesterday's CRIMSON, there will be no principal disputants. The debate will be wholly for speakers from the floor.

The meeting to organize the Freshman Debating Union will be held next Wednesday night in Sever 11. Professor Cummings and members of the Harvard Union and Wendell Phillips Club will speak.
