'Varsity Football.

The 'varsity practice yesterday was vigorous and spirited. At the end of the first ten minute half the men were well winded from the swiftness of the play. The first eleven did not score during the first half and indeed the ball was in their territory most of the time. Continued rushes through the centre and between tackle and guard by Jackson, Hayes and Hamlen brought the ball to the first eleven's 20 yard line. Then the first made a stand and got the ball on four downs, but immediately lost it by a bad fumble. It looked then as though the second might score.

In the second half the first eleven scored but once, by quick aggressive rushes through the centre. On the whole the second eleven showed up better than the first, especially in the first half, when their work was very aggressive.

The line up was as follows:

FIRST ELEVEN. SECOND ELEVEN.

A. Brewer, r.e. l.e., Moulton.

The first eleven backs retired in the second half and their places were filled by the second eleven backs. Weld, Dunlop and Phelan filled the positions of backs on the second eleven.

This is the first appearance of Weld '97 with the 'varsity squad.
