'Varsity Practice.

Owing to the wetness of the grounds yesterday afternoon, the 'varsity eleven did not begin their secret practice as had been intended, but went through the regular work on the old field.

The first hour was devoted almost entirely to practice in breaking through the rush line to stop kicks. Brewer and Wrightington were put behind the line and did the punting while the first eleven tried to hold the second. Later they went over to the second eleven and the 'varsity had its turn at breaking through. In this work Wheeler on the second, though he played opposite Waters, did particularly well. Brewer's punting was not very good but this was partially due to the wetness of the ball and Wrenn's frequently inaccurate passing.

After this work the two teams lined up for a short practice game. As usual, the 'varsity had no difficulty in scoring, and made two touchdowns in the few minutes' play. Their gains through the line, however, were made very largely by sheer weight and push, no holes being opened for the backs, who ran right into the opposing tackler. The interference on round the end plays was more satisfactory.

Doucette and Whittemore were the only two who did noticeably good individual work. The former was tried at right guard on the second eleven, and toward the end of the practice took the place of Norton Shaw on the 'varsity. Here he did some fine tackling and repeatedly broke through the rush line. Whittemore, in the ten minutes he played fullback on the 'varsity, made two long runs, one almost the whole length of the field.
