Communication.

To the Editors of the Crimson:

At a meeting of the Athletic Committee held on January 18, 1894, it was voted that the election of Mr. Joseph Wiggin, of the Law School, as captain of the baseball nine for the season of 1894 be ratified by the committee.

In communicating this vote the Athletic Committee desires to express its belief in the principle, sanctioned by an almost unbroken line of precedents, that captains of athletic teams should be chosen from undergraduate students.

The present conditions in baseball are, however, abnormal. Not one of those who played against Yale in 1893 is now an undergraduate. Influenced by this consideration the Graduate Advisory Committee on Baseball has urgently requested that the choice of the baseball team be confirmed. Inasmuch as the situation in baseball is unprecedented and, under the new rule of eligibility, is never likely to occur again, the committee has deemed it expedient to make, in this instance, an exception to the general principles.

JAMES BARR AMES, Chairman Athletic Committee.
