Harvard turned the tables on Holy Cross yesterday afternoon winning by a score of 10 to 1. The visiting team barely escaped a shut out. For seven innings they were retired without a score, only three of them reaching third base during this time. In the eighth Leahy was given his base on called balls, he stole second and came home on a passed ball by Mason, making the first and only run for Holy Cross.
Jack Highlands and Mason were the battery for Harvard. The work of the former was highly effective. The only signs of weakness and lack of practice were the four bases on balls and a wild pitch. On the other hand Holy Cross hit safely but three times, while thirteen struck out. Highland's work in the second was a pretty exhibition of pitching. Two Holy Cross men reached third and second on a wild pitch and two bases on balls. With no men out a score seemed inevitable, but by very clever work he succeeded in striking cut the next three men at bat.
Harvard played an errorless game. Her batting was a feature; thirteen with a total of twenty-one being made. Hallowell and Sullivan did some particularly creditable work. Hallowell out of four times at the bat made two singles, a double, and a triple. Sullivan's record was equally remarkable, if not more so; out of three times at the bat he made a single, a triple and a home run. Highlands and Mason also batted well. Mason's work behind the bat was creditable, though he appeared a little out of practice, particularly in throwing to bases.
Harvard had the game well in hand after the first inning. Nine men came to the bat during Harvard's half. Mason field out, but Hallowell reached third on a beautiful hit to left field. A single by Highlands brought him in, scoring an earned run. Upton's hit to first forced Highlands out at second. Then a base on balls and an error by Hickey left the bases filled and two men out. It was a superb chance for a heavy hit and Sullivan was quite equal to the emergency. His three bagger sent in the three runs and Trafford's single which followed made the fifth score. Hapgood struck out and ended the inning.
In the second Harvard's lead was increased by one Mason scored on his single, a steal, another single by Hallowell and a passed ball. Then in the sixth and seventh two more runs were made, one of them a home run by Sullivan. Three hits in succession in the ninth by Mason. Hallowell and Highlands and a couple of steals by the first two gave Harvard two more earned runs, leaving the final score 10 to 1 in Harvard's favor.
