HARVARD 12, U. OF VERMONT 2.

The game yesterday against the University of Vermont was in no way what had been expected. The visiting team was very weak, and did not give the Harvard nine even a good afternoon's practice. Vermont, on the thirteenth had put up a strong game against Yale, beating her 4 to 3, and perhaps she was unable to make two great efforts at so short an interval. However that may be, the game was onesided throughout. Harvard batted Cooke all over the field, opening every inning, with the exception of of the first and eighth which were on base on balls, with a two or three base hit. Mason and Hallowell led in the batting. The base running in several instances was bad, as is only too apt to be the case. Once Hallowell made an error in trying to reach third by forcing a throw to second, and was put out. Abbott, also, through bad coaching was thrown out at home for trying too much on his three bagger. Once Sullivan was not on second when badly needed there. Such mistakes should not happen.

A. Highlands pitched very steadily, allowing only seven scattered singles. Frothingham did not put up his usual reliable game. He made three errors in close succession, but redeemed himself to a great extent by his brilliant catch of a low fly, and assist in a double, by catching a runner off first.

For the Vermont nine Kinsella did the best work. He made a couple of wild throws to second, and almost immediately after caught Upton and Frothingham there, by very pretty throws. Hill at short stop also played a good game.

In the first seven innings the visitors were retired without a run. In the third Cooke came near scoring, but was thrown out at the plate by a pretty throw of of Frothingham's. In the sixth Richardson was similarly thrown out at the plate by Trafford. In the eighth Vermont scored her two runs. Allen got his base on balls; Richmond made a hit but was caught at second; Naylor got first, stole second, and both men came in on a single by Kinsella. This ended their scoring.

For Harvard, Mason started off with a base on balls; Abbott made a single, and Hallowell brought both in on his single. Upton struck out, and the next two men flied out. In the second Sullivan made a three bagger and came in on Trafford's single. A. Highlands struck out. Abbott got first, and Trafford came in on a wild throw to second, and later Abbott on a fumble by Richmond. The next inning Frothingham made a two base hit, stole third and came in on a fumble by Naylor. In the fourth Abbott made a two base hit and came in on Hallowell's two bagger. Harvard was shut out for the next innings. In the seventh Abbott made a three base hit and came in on Frothingham's single. The next inning Harvard made four runs by Trafford. Mason, Abbott and Hallowell, the last three being earned runs. The following is the score by innings. It will be interesting to see that eight of the twelve runs were earned, and that there were fourteen hits, with a total of twenty-four, which is certainly heavy batting.
