The ease with which Harvard defeated the University of Pennsylvania was as gratifying as surprising. Not only did Harvard tie the series between the two universities, but Bayne, the visitor's crack pitcher, was batted out of the box in two innings, and Jack Highlands was withdrawn at the end of the fourth to save him for the hard games later in the week.
On both sides the playing was far from faultless. Harvard showed a serious weakness at third base. Hapgood made two throws for which Trafford had to leave his base, and one completely out of reach. These errors were responsible for all the visitor's runs. Trafford made a low throw to Hapgood which most basemen could have handled.
It was hard to realize that the visitors had beaten Harvard one game and tied one game. Reese and Blair made square muffs, and Contrell and Thompson fumbles. Harvard hit the ball all over the field as long as Bayne was in the box. Coogan alone played with the snap and determination expected of the visitors.
Jack Highlands allowed but one hit during the four innings he was in the box, and Andy Highlands was effective except in the fifth inning. Hallowell made the most brilliant play of the game. He caught a low fly just back of second, and while still running, threw to first before Thomas, who was by no means napping, could get back to his base.
Harvard earned two runs in the first. Hallowell beat the ball to first, Highlands made a single, and both scored on Frothingham's hit. In the second Contrell failed to put the third man out, and let in two runs, then Reese's muff added two more. Harvard made four hits, scoring five earned runs.
Boswell, who went into the box in the third, shut Harvard out for one inning. Frothingham scored in the fourth on an error, and in the fifth Trafford and Hapgood added two more.
The visitors scored in the fifth. Reese reached first on Hapgood's poor throw and went around on hits by Blair and Coogan. Blair was thrown out at the plate, but Coogan scored on a sacrifice and Boswell on a wild pitch. In the ninth, with two out another error by Hapgood let Thomson in with the fourth run.
