The Prospect Union is in a very successful state. The membership amounts to about 250, and has been this way for over a year.
The finances of the Union are never in an exceedingly flourishing condition, but just at present they are a little better than usual. This fact is due to the success of the Glee Club concert which was given for the benefit of the Union last February. From this concert over $265.00 were received.
Lectures are given every Wednesday evening a the Union rooms in the Prospect House Building in Cambridgeport, Last spring additional lectures were held on other evenings of the week, and no doubt similar arrangements for lectures will be made this year. Among the men who have been lecturing this year are Professor Ashley, William Lloyd Garrison, Professor Gates and Mr. Parker, of the Latin department. There are no lecture courses given, but each lecture is on a different subject.
The evening classes are doing very well. There are twenty three of these classes in all and they are taken charge of by students of the University and resident graduates. The courses consist of the languages, English, American and Greek literature, Social Ethics, History, Political Science, Philosophy, Mathematics, Natural Science, and a few miscellaneous studies, such as vocal music, book keeping and drawing. Mr. Adams of the Lawrence Scientific School is giving a course in electricity.
The members of the Union wish it understood that all members of the university are welcome at the Thursday evening lectures. These lectures are followed by a general discussion which is open to all, where an opportunity for questioning the lecturer is given.
