The first Winter Meeting, held in the gymnasium Saturday afternoon, was fairy well attended, but in point of interest and number of events was not a successful as those of last year. There were plenty of entries for the several events but for some reason or other only. a few of the men came to the scratch and five of the events had to be omitted. The principal feature of the meeting was She s shot putting. In two successful throws he made 40 feet finches, easily beating Finlay's indoor record of 39 feet 10 inches made two years ago and coming within 41-2 inches of the Harvard record made by Evins at the New England Championship games last June.
The first events on the programme was putting the shot. There were six entries but only two men put in an appearance W. H. Shea L. S and N. D. Alexander L. S. The works of both men was very creditable, Shea winning with about of 40 feet 6 inches. Alexander's best put was 3s feet 7 inches.
The next event was the special weight sparring at 140 pounds. Here again only two of the five entries appeared, C. H. Crane '94 and T. H. Mastin Sp. '96. Crane had an advantage in height and reach but Mastin was the more scientific. In the first round the fighting was very light and Crane did most of the leading.
In the second round Mastin became more aggressive and several times the men came well together and it was give and take. Mastin getting a little the best of it. The third round was very exciting, the men fighting close in most of the time. Mastin got the best of the round and the Referee declared him the winner.
E. E. Clark. 94 won the middle weight wrestling by default but wrestled an exhibition match with Gould. Gould was much the heavier and stronger but did not succeed in throwing Clark until the end of the third bout.
By far the most even and exciting event of the day was the feather weight sparring between C. Smith '96 and V. Monroe 96 The men were so evenly matched that the Referee called for an extra round of two minutes. In the first round Monroe led a little the more frequently, but the fighting was very light and even. In the second round both made some very hot rushes and each man nearly succeeded in getting a knockdown.
The third round was very even both rushing and giving a fair exchange of blows.
The extra round was in favor of Smith who appeared the fresher of the two and his heavy blows on Monroe's wind told in the end.
The exhibition match between Gardner Perry L. S and P. V. K. Johnson '93 was a face from beginning to end but furnished amusement to the crowd.
The last event was an exhibition between H. L. Newman '94 and T. H. Mastin Sp. '96. Newman was taller, heavier and had the longer reach He had very Little trouble in winning form Mastin, Who was very weak from his first fight.
