Rev. William B. Frisbie, D. D. of the Church of the Advent, Boston, addressed the St. Paul's Society last night in the Society room. He said: Today is the feast of St. Matthias, the apostle chosen to fill the place of Judas. In the study of Mathias we have almost nothing to guide us, we know only that it was he whom God chose to be his apostle. This alone shows that he must have been a man who had been with Christ and had known him, who was full of religious zeal and who was ready to sacrifice himself. Zeal and self sacrifice are the two chief characteristics of the apostles, and if we would live like them we must be zealous in religion and we must learn to sacrifice ourselves. There are two kinds of zeal, one blind and uninstructed, and one according to knowledge. Headlong zeal will never bring success in anything, whether it be business, study, or religion, but we must try to be zealous in religion by learning what Christ would have us do, by being with him and by putting ourselves under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. If we would follow Christ we must be ready to sacrifice everything that conflicts with His service. To be zealous we must sacrifice ourselves, we must learn what Christ would have us do and we must then subdue our bodies to His spirit. This season of Lent is a special time for self sacrifice and so it is a good thing to give up some self-indulgence to teach our bodies that the spirit is master, and to see that we can control ourselves.
