Base Ball at Amherst.

The prospects for a strong nine at Amherst are very bright. Thirty men have presented themselves as candidates for the team. Ellis, Gregory, Colby and Smith are the most prominent candidates for pitchers, while Allen, Hunt, Pratt and Van Sant are trying for catcher's position.

The batteries have already begun light work in the cage, and immediately after the Junior Promenade all candidates will go into training. There has been some talk of having a second nine, but the idea has been given up. However the men will be put into two divisions, one practising in the morning; the other in the afternoon. The number of candidates will be reduced as rapidly as possible so that the men who are ultimately to compose the team may do better work.
