In answer to Captain Davis' call for candidates for the 'varsity crew, about twenty-five men presented themselves yesterday afternoon. Today the first actual work will be done, and now at the very beginning of the season of crew practice we wish to bring to the attention of the students the need of a larger number of candidates and of unusual interest in the work. Last year took from our 'varsity boat six men and their places must be filled by men chosen from the candidates who do this work through the winter. There ought to be twice as many candidates as have answered the call so far. The number of places to be filled makes it absolutely necessary that all the good material in the University should show itself. It is unreasonable to suppose that there are only twenty-five men here who are physically able and who care enough about the matter to try for the crew. The great test now is physical strength; particular ability will show itself as the work goes on. Every man who is at all suited physically will be given a chance for a place in the boat. With so many places to fill it becomes a serious question how we are to turn out a good crew, and this matter of candidates simply reduces itself to a question of college spirit. We cannot have the best crew till the best men try for the boat and the best men cannot be chosen till all the possible candidates have been given a trial.
