The second petition to flood Holmes Field for a skating pond was refused by the Corporation at their last meeting. With this final decision the project will have to be abandoned.
While no definite statement has been made by the Corporation, it is understood that they opposed the petition unanimously. The chief objections were: the late time of the year for beginning a scheme which would be essentially experimental; the liability to injure the field by embankments for the pond, and by the extensive drainage required; the liability to kill the grass by so much ice; the apparently deficient estimate of the expense of the work; and the inconvenience to those who have to cross the field. The Corporation has never been in favor of enclosures where admission is paid, and they felt that a skating pond on Holmes Field, run like a common rink, would be sadly out of harmony with the surroundings.
